A new surprise for the world of Art has just happened. Three experts from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam discovered a new picture by the artist in Norway. Sunset at Montmajour, the provisional title given by experts, was painted in 1888 while Van Gogh was living in Arles, south of France. The painting is a landscape showing a beautiful countryside near Arles with a ruined abbey on the hill of Montmajour.
A Norwegian industrialist, C. N. Mustad, bought the painting in 1908 and took it home to Norway. Some time later, an art collector and expert visited Mustad and suggested it was probably a fake. Furious, the industrialist sent it to the attic. So, it has been more than 100 years lost to the public eye. The picture will be on display in the Van Gogh Museum from 24 September.
